Our history demonstrates our tradition, pioneering spirit and flexibility in Brazil’s publishing and retail bookselling markets.

Everything began in 1914, when Joaquim Ignácio da Fonseca Saraiva, a Portuguese immigrant, opened a small second-hand bookstore in Largo do Ouvidor in São Paulo. Due to its location near the Largo de São Francisco Law School, as well as the personal interest and knowledge of Mr. Saraiva, the establishment, then called “Livraria Acadêmica”, became known to the law professors and students who frequented the region and began to specialize in law books, which is an important part of the Company’s business until today.

In the same decade, Mr. Saraiva published his first book, Casamento Civil (Civil Marriage), inaugurating the publishing phase of the bookstore, which would continue to focus on the legal area for the next 30 years. The publisher, however, would extend its operations into textbooks, general literature and the sciences, among others, while at the same time consolidating its operations in the legal area and becoming the most respected publisher of law books in the country.

In 1947, Saraiva became a corporation entitled Saraiva S.A. – Livreiros Editores. A large number of former students flocked to the bookstore to buy shares in the new company in homage to its founder “Counselor” Saraiva. As of the 1970’s, it began publishing textbooks and supplementary textbooks, and in 1972 it became a publicly-traded corporation.

Also in the 70s, it began its growth process, initiating the creation of a chain of stores by opening its second Livraria Saraiva in the Praça da Sé, a central landmark in the city of São Paulo. In the following decade, given the growing number of titles published, Editora Saraiva set up a proprietary distribution service for its own books. In 1983, it began expanding its bookstore chain, opening new stores in other Brazilian states as well as in shopping malls.

In the 90s, it reaffirmed the pioneering nature so evident in its law book operation, by publishing supplementary textbooks, works that complement the teaching of various subjects in the primary and secondary school curriculum. At the end of the decade, it moved into books on administration, economics and marketing for the post-secondary curriculum. In the same period, the retail division opened the first of a series of fully computerized megastores.

In 1998, Saraiva concluded the acquisition of Editora Atual and began selling its products electronically through its website www.saraiva.com.br., one of the first e-commerce sites in Brazil.

In 2006, it joined the Corporate Governance Level 2 listing segment of the São Paulo Stock Exchange (BOVESPA) and in April of the same year held a highly successful primary issue of three million preferred shares, strengthening its financial position for the development of studies and the implementation of investment projects.

In 2007, it acquired Pigmento Editorial S.A., responsible for the Ético Learning System, comprising a line of teaching materials edited with the utmost conceptual rigor and a line of teaching support services of proven quality. In the same year, taking one more step towards the future, Saraiva created products to meet the education market’s demand for digital content.

At the beginning of 2008, Saraiva substantially expanded its publishing and bookstore market potential by acquiring outright control of Grupo Siciliano and began operating all the Siciliano stores and website, as well as incorporating the Arx and Caramelo publishing imprints.

In 2010, Editora Saraiva launched Agora, a learning system for public schools, and created the Benvirá imprint for fiction and non-fiction books. Also in 2010, Saraiva.com launched the Saraiva Digital Reader, an e-book platform, and the TV manufacturer LG launched a line of products with internet access incorporating Saraiva’s digital movie sales platform. In April of the same year, the retail division opened the first iTown store, totally dedicated to the sale of Apple products.

In 2012, Editora Saraiva launched a new imprint, SaraivaTec, to meet growing demand for vocational and undergraduate technology courses. In October of the same year, Saraiva and Hoper Educação launched Solução de Aprendizagem, a new methodology to support professors of law and business administration in the classroom and provide students with a better learning experience.

In 2013, Saraiva announced the launch of its self-publishing solution, Publique-se!, which allows users to transform text into e-books with a single click. In the same year, Editora Saraiva took an important strategic step in regard to adding even more value to its educational solutions with the acquisition of Editora Érica Ltda. The transaction marked its entry into the vocational training content market, strengthening diversification and increasing Saraiva’s importance in the Brazilian publishing market. In September, it opened its first airport store in São Paul International Airport (Cumbica). Also in 2013, it received the “2013 Época ReclameAqui Award – Best Companies for Consumers” in the E-commerce category and was also elected a Superchampion Company in the general ranking, which includes the best companies from 62 categories.

The year of 2015 marked a major change in the Saraiva’s activities with the sale of publishing assets, which now allows the company to focus 100% on its retail activities, including physical stores and e-commerce.
